AGAINST THE SUN

BBFC advice: contains moderate gory moments
If Against The Sun had been the first of the rash of marooned-at-sea dramas then I probably would have rated it more highly.
Unfortunately, it is in the shadow of Life Of Pi, Simshar, In The Heart Of The Sea and, the best of the lot, Unbroken,
And Brian Falk's movie, while having its heart in the right place, just doesn't have the dramatic edge of any of the above.
I suspect that may be down to its budget being much less than at least three of the aforementioned.
Against The Sun is based on the true story of three World War II pilots who have to ditch their plane hundreds of miles from land in the Pacific and are left with just an inflatable raft with no drinkable water or food.
Garret Dillahunt plays the senior officer, Harold Dixon, while Tom Felton and Jake Abel make up the trio who are left the harshest of tests against the elements.
The problem with Falk's film is that it is so heavily reliant on its dialogue and acting being of the highest standard because much of it is the equivalent of a three-hand play.
Sadly, however, its characters did not grab me enough to be invested in their future,
In addition, the sporadic scenes of high drama needed to be more intense to make them believable.
There is no doubt that the original story of the three men is astonishing and inspirational but its adaptation was not sharp enough.
Reasons to watch: incredible true story
Reasons to avoid: not as dramatic as it should be
Laughs: none
Jumps: none
Vomit: none
Nudity: none
Overall rating: 4.5/10
