BBFC advice: Contains strong sex, strong language

I have watched more films from Iran than I have from Wales but, as any avid film-watcher will know quantity and quality tend not to be related.
Gareth Bryn's Welsh drama, The Passing, surrounds two young lovers, Sara and Iwan (Annes Elway and Dyfan Dwyfor) whose car has crashed down a ravine in remote countryside.
Mark Lewis Jones plays their saviour, Stanley, who takes them to his farmhouse which has been unchanged in decades.
Then he scarcely speaks as he helps badly injured Sara back to health.
But the longer the couple stay the more that tension between the trio begins to spark until revelations of their past are thrust to the fore.
Bryn's film juxtaposes the isolated surroundings of Stanley's sparse home with the sudden spark of two very feisty young people. It also jars the farm's very insular owner against their rather brazen actions.
It is a theatrically constructed if occasionally slow piece of work which gradually builds into a thought-provoking climax.
And there are impressive performances from a small cast who are prodding at each other's emotions, in very different ways, throughout.

Reasons to watch: a low-budget but powerful Welsh drama
Reasons to avoid: meanders and needs concentration

Laughs: none
Jumps: none
Vomit: none
Nudity: yes
Overall rating: 6/10
