161. 10 Cloverfield Lane; movie review

10 CLOVERFIELD LANE
Cert 12A
103 mins
BBFC advice: Contains moderate threat, violence, infrequent strong language

WHEN the word Cloverfield first appeared on the 2016 movie release schedule I groaned because it reminded me of how my head ached while watching a monster movie through the lens of a hand-held camera a few years ago.
Therefore, I was not only surprised at the really high quality of this thriller sequel but also relieved that it was not reliant on so-called “found footage.”
In fact, there is only a passing connection between the original Cloverfields and this new movie, directed by Dan Trachtenberg, which has more of a similarity to the brilliant Room which came out earlier this year.
Here, a young woman (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) finds herself chained up in an underground cellar after waking up following a car crash.
She fears she has been kidnapped but her “captor” (John Goodman) insists that he not only saved her from the wreck but also from Armageddon which is now happening outside of the sealed bunker which he has been building for years.
The question of whether he is telling the truth is the film’s focus.
Goodman proves that fine comics make great straight actors in a superbly creepy performance while Winstead is an excellent foil as the girl who is desperate to find answers.
A quirky 60s soundtrack adds spice to a film which keeps the audience guessing and crackles throughout.

Reasons to watch: tense thriller with great performances
Reasons to avoid: if you are of a nervous disposition

Laughs: none
Jumps: three
Vomit: none
Nudity: none
Overall rating: 9/10
