158. Batman V Superman - Dawn Of Justice; movie review

BATMAN V SUPERMAN - DAWN OF JUSTICE
Cert 12A
151 mins
BBFC advice: Contains moderate violence, threat

Just occasionally, I come out of a cinema angry because I feel that I have given up a chunk of my life for no good reason.
Such was my emotion after watching Batman v Superman. It was a massive mess of a movie which completely missed the point of why the public has such a love of superheroes.
Basically, Zack Snyder portrays both Batman (Ben Affleck) and Superman (Henry Cavill) as tortured souls who are unappreciated by the wider public and press who have suddenly cottoned on to the fact that hundreds of people are killed from the fall-out of their battles with baddies.
The more Superman's failing are hammed up, the more irate Batman seems to become, vowing to knock him off his perch.
In the middle of it all are Lex Luthor (Jesse Eisenberg) who wants to clear the city of any superheroes so he can take over with his own dastardly plan and Lois Lane (Amy Adams) whose life seems to be saved every third minute by the lovelorn Superman.
Actually, that makes it seem to make much more sense than it does. In reality, after an hour I murmured to Mrs W, asking what the heck was going on. She shrugged her shoulders.
Any plot is submerged beneath an avalanche of falling buildings and the darkness which pervades the whole movie.
Meanwhile, Affleck and Cavill huskily whisper so that I could barely understand what they were saying despite watching in the loudest IMAX cinema in the Midlands.
By contrast, Eisenberg shouts at warp speed throughout the movie.
Batman V Superman is humourless and lacks humanity but here's the rub - it is one of the biggest box office hits of all time.
So why have the paying public eye spat so precisely in the eye of its critics?
Master W's housemate tweeted: "Really enjoyed it, respect DC for taking the gamble and not just straight copying the Marvel formula."
I guess his words give the game away. This is a film for comic-con geeks. Everyone else should avoid it.

Reasons to avoid: Misses the point of why we love superheroes
