BBFC advice: Contains strong language, sex references, drug use
I began my student days in the autumn of 1980 and it was quite possible that My Sharona by The Knack was playing in the halls of residence as I arrived.
And that is probably where the similarity to Everybody Wants Some!! and my time at Wolverhampton Polytechnic ends.
Sadly, I didn't giggle nearly as much as I expected I would during Richard Linklater's latest movie.
I write as someone who adored Linklater's brilliant Boyhood and have been a fan of previous work such as Bernie and School Of Rock.
Indeed, after having my appetite whetted by its trailer, I expected a cross between American Pie and School Of Rock.
It is nowhere near as funny as either and I am dumbfounded by its plaudits.
I can only presume that it has particular cultural references that have tickled American audiences because it has very quickly disappeared from screens on this side of the Atlantic.
In my opinion, that could be down to the shallowness of its characters.
Everybody Wants Some!! focuses on university baseball players who live in the same fraternity house.
There they defy rules surrounding booze, drugs and women and sprinkle their day with juvenile practical jokes.
And that is pretty much it. Lots of pretty young people seem to be having a lovely time but I only laughed twice,
However, the day is just about saved by a soundtrack which includes classics such as Pop Muzik by M, Because The Night by Patti Smith, Cheap Trick's I Want You To Want Me and a sparkling rendition of the Sugarhill Gang's Rapper's Delight.
Reasons to watch: Its wonderful 80s soundtrack
Reasons to avoid: It is not nearly as funny as would be expected
Laughs: two
Jumps: none
Vomit: yes
Nudity: yes
Overall rating: 5.5/10
