THE ANGRY BIRDS MOVIE

BBFC advice: Contains very mild bad language, comic slapstick, innuendo, toilet humour
Apparently, Angry Birds is a very popular app video game franchise which has been made into a movie.
I say "apparently" because the game has passed both Mrs W and me by and so we had neither positive nor negative anticipation of Clay Kaytis and Fergal Reilly's film.
But I can report that we laughed enough to rate it as one of the best children's pictures of 2016 so far.
In fact, my only regret is not seeing a daytime screening to see how The Angry Birds Movie resonated with children.
I would suspect that they would have found it very funny. However, it has not had as long a run at UK cinema screens as I would have expected.
The film surrounds Red (voiced by Jason Sudeikis), the outsider of a community of flightless birds who have shunned him because of his anger management issues.
Therefore, he is scorned when he expresses doubt about the motives of 'friendly' pigs who suddenly arrive on the birds' island.
The Angry Birds Movie is fast-paced and is laced with both humour and pathos, backed up by a breezy soundtrack.
It boasts voice work of Hollywood notables Josh Gad, Danny McBride, Maya Rudolph, Sean Penn, and Peter Dinklage to back up the aptly angry and doom-laden Red.
In fact, I guess that the best commendation I can give it is that I would never have known it had been an App game.
Reasons to watch: enough laughs for kids and adults
Reasons to avoid: if you are a fan of pigs....
Laughs: five
Jumps: none
Vomit: yes
Nudity: none
Overall rating: 8/10
