223. Fan; movie review

FAN
Cert 12A
138 mins
BBFC advice: Contains moderate violence, sex references

So, just how did Shah Rukh Khan do it?
Of course, a bit of trick photography is needed when an actor plays two characters who appear on screen at the same time.
But during Fan, SRK plays a much younger man who is also quite a bit smaller in size and physique than the Bollywood superstar.
Fan is one of the best Bollywood films I have seen. It had me rapt from its thoughtful opening to its crushing finale.
Khan is Gaurav Chadana - an obsessed fan of a supposedly fictitious actor called Aryan Khanna who has an uncanny resemblance to the real life SRK who also plays him.
Gaurav not only fixates upon Khanna but also looks like him and impersonates him in local talent contests,
When he wins he decides to take his trophy to present to his hero on his birthday. However, what would seem to be a harmless adventure becomes a deadly drama.
Fan has me gripped for its entire 138 minutes thanks to a combination of the superb direction and writing of Maneesh Sharma and wonderful acting by SRK.
I particularly loved the way its tension gradually ratchets up, leading to a stunning climax and the way it prompts its audience to think hard about whose side they are on.
Actually, its complexities are such that I am still not sure now where right and wrong lay.
If you haven't experienced Bollywood and feel like dipping your toe then this is the perfect place to start. It is out on DVD now.

Reasons to watch: a towering performance by Shah Rukh Khan
Reasons to avoid: there are a couple of glaring plot holes

Laughs: none
Jumps: none
Vomit: yes
Nudity: none
Overall rating: 9/10
