218. Mirror To Windows - The Artist As Woman; movie review

MIRRORS TO WINDOWS - THE ARTIST AS WOMAN
Cert TBA
75 mins
BBFC advice: TBA

During the past five years, I have learned much about art by watching many documentaries on its various different facets.
I am pleased to report that Susan Steinberg's documentary opened out further arenas which had been previously unexplored.
Steinberg's film is based around women who have made a significant impact on a male-dominated world.
It follows three generations of artists from those just making their mark to the well-established and covers their progress over three years.
I confess that some of the work went over my head, particularly that of Rose Wylie who, at the age of 80, has been feted for her paintings
But I surprised myself by falling for Alice Anderson's sculptures which are created with copper wire.
The artists give a very open assessment of their background, their art and how they feel it has been received.
It is interesting how their thought processes work and how the younger artists are finding their feet in terms of style.
Some of the women show great confidence, some less so. Some have had harsher lives than others. But they are all very intelligent and articulate.
Mirror To Windows is that type of documentary which will appeal to those who used to enjoy the South Bank Show. It gives women artists a platform they deserve.

Reasons to watch: highlights women who see life from a different slant
Reasons to avoid: open mind is needed

Laughs: none
Jumps: none
Vomit: none
Nudity: as portrayed in sculptures and paintings
Overall rating: 6.5/10
