ALICE THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS
Cert 12A
113 mins
BBFC advice: Contains mild threat, mild bad language
IN my opinion, Alice In Wonderland, directed by Tim Burton and released six years ago, was a mess of a movie.
Therefore, I was very apprehensive when the baton was handed to James Bobin to mould a sequel.
I need not have worried. Alice Through The Looking Glass is fast-paced fun with some gloriously rich characters and dazzling special effects.
Mia Wasikowska returns as Alice who has become a ship’s captain but is lured back into the fantastic world of the Mad Hatter (Johnny Depp) and co. through a two-way mirror.
She finds the Hatter in bad shape, lamenting the loss of his family so agrees to try to spin back time to prevent them being killed.
En route she literally needs to outwit Time, played with panache and a Werner Herzog-like German accent by Sacha Baron Cohen.
He adds a real fizz to the movie as does Helena Bonham Carter who is deliciously fiendish as the evil princess Iracebeth.
This being an Alice movie, part of the fun is the way that animals such as Absolem (Alan Rickman), The Marech Hare (Paul Whitehouse) and the Cheshire Cat (Stephen Fry) have talking parts and how quirky objects come to life.
It is a melting pot of lovable eccentricity and a smashing family film.
Reasons to watch: fast-paced fun
Reasons to avoid: presumes knowledge of its predecessor
Laughs: a few chuckles
Jumps: none
Vomit: none
Nudity: none
Overall rating: 8/10
