245. Where You're Meant To Be; movie review

WHAT YOU'RE MEANT TO BE
Cert 15
76 mins
BBFC advice: Contains very strong language, strong sex references

The everyfilm challenge is punctuated by the occasionally completely incomprehensible and a smattering of the unexpectedly warm.
Thankfully, Paul Fegan's documentary lands firmly in the latter category - a movie of which I had little expectation but genuinely made me feel good.
The particularly interesting aspect of Where You're Meant To be is that Fegan only intended it to be a fairly straightforward fly-on-the-wall reflection of Aidan Moffat's musical tour of Scotland.
Moffat, a self-deprecating singer/song-writer and storyteller, was due to play his modern interpretation of traditional Scottish folk songs at venues throughout the land.
But before he hit the road he met Sheila Stewart, a 79-year-old balladeer, who is the last in a line of travelling folk.
The film then moved on to run the story of the tour, slices of Sheila's history and glimpses of her relationship with Aidan which becomes feisty because she disapproves of him changing the lyrics of her beloved tunes.
The pair argue about the need to re-work the songs while audiences are divided on the debate.
But what seems to be a trivial row culminates in an emotional denouement at the famous Barrowland Club In Glasgow.
For me, Where You're Meant To Be followed soon on from the Hamish documentary which revealed much about the Scottish folk scene.
It prompted a burning desire to see some live music when we visit the home of Mrs W's ancestors later this summer.

Reasons to watch: a rich slice of Scottish culture
Reasons to avoid: a tad self-indulgent
