263. Independence Day: Resurgence; movie review

INDEPENDENCE DAY - RESURGENCE
Cert 12A
122 mins
BBFC advice: Contains moderate violence, injury detail, threat

"What goes up, must come down," says Jeff Goldblum, philosophically, as a whole city is lifted hundreds of feet into the air during an alien attack on earth.
But why did Hollywood put up a sequel to the much beloved Independence Day and give us all such a downer?
There have been many inept cinematic follow-ups over the years but this must rank alongside the most disappointing.
In my view it reaches the dizzy heights of 4/10 only because of its stunning special effects and the contribution, albeit curtailed, of Goldblum.
Otherwise, Roland Emmerich's Independence Day: Resurgence is a charmless howler which misses the key points of why the original was such a winner.
For a start, the former had rounded characters who we rooted for, it had a captivating storyline and its special effects were more impressive than we had ever seen at the time.
This time, it is akin to watching a film in which the makers have popped their hands into the deep freeze and just pulled out last year's leftovers.
So, Bill Pullman plays the former president who suddenly shakes off dementia to lead the fight against the returning aliens and Brent Spiner literally awakes from a 20-year coma with scarcely an ill-effect.
Goldblum and Judd Hirsch, who plays his dad, are also around while the youth comes in the form of fighter pilots, played by Liam Hemsworth, Jessie T. Usher and Maika Monroe.
They are the frontline against the aliens who seem even stronger this time and are determined to drill to the earth's core for a vital resource.
Did I say that part of 'our' team is an African warlord and some gold-diggers on the only tiny boat left on the ocean?
Or that a school bus is involved in the most ludicrous scene at the cinema this year?
No - that would be suggesting that Independence Day is on the cusp of being so bad it's good when the fact is that it is just plain boring and I needed all my power to stop myself dropping off.

Reasons to once: the humongous special effects
Reasons to avoid: it really is pretty boring

Laughs: none
Jumps: none
Vomit: yes
Nudity: none
Overall rating: 4/10
