243. Warcraft: The Beginning; movie review

WARCRAFT - THE BEGINNING
Cert 12A
123 mins
BBFC advice: Contains moderate fantasy violence

I have never understood the fascination for Warcraft or all things Orc-like.
And that created a bit of a divide with my son when he was younger because he was well into collecting figurines and even went to the shops where other fans played each other at games which I couldn't comprehend.
Fortunately, my parental barrage broke him down in the end and he became a Coventry City football fan and a very decent cricketer (perhaps he should have stuck with the Orcs).
Anyway, I wish he had been around to watch Warcraft -The Beginning with me because he could have clarified the plot.
To be fair, Mrs W didn't do a bad job - she's more into slobbering giants with protruding teeth than I am.
Apparently, Warcraft - The Beginning has been more successful at the box office than any other adaptation of a video game but the cynic in me would suggest there has scarcely been overwhelming competition (Prince Of Persia was the previous highest).
Directed by Duncan Jones (I was rather surprised to find him in this arena), the film portrays the early battles between orcs and humans.
The longer is went on, the more I understood the nuances although I can't say I am an expert in Fel Magic and why the Orcs are just so damned keen on fighting.
Thankfully, I could focus on Ben Foster, a human protector who has a nasty addiction to the aforementioned Fel Magic.
Meanwhile, I couldn't help marvel at the orc make-up of Toby Kebbell whose character shows a rare conscience among the marauders.
Being based on a video game, it can't come as a great surprised that Warcraft - The Beginning is dominated by CGI but that will not deter its fans who have already made it a box office bonanza.

Reasons to watch: its special effects
Reasons to avoid: its initially confusing storyline

Vomit: none
Nudity: none
Overall rating: 6/10
