FROM VEGAS TO MACAU III (賭城風雲III)
Cert 12A
113 mins
BBFC advice: Contains moderate violence
"I think I'm watching From Vegas To Macau III", claimed a Twitter writer, adding "I honestly don't know what anything means any more."
I nicked this quote because I could not think of a better way of summing up Jing Wong's movie.
It didn't help that I had not seen the two previous outings of this trilogy but even if I had I reckon this would have still taxed my powers of deduction. I have even resorted to reading other reviews and I am little the wiser.
From Vegas to Macau III includes a beautiful woman (Carina Lau) kept in suspended animation in a fish tank, a mob boss (Chow Yun Fat) hypnotised into a state of dementia, robots with artificial intelligence falling in love, chaotic martial arts-style fights and a winner-takes-all gambling match between the chief protagonists.
One of the latter is a mad scientist, played by Jack Cheung who has set himself up against the aforementioned mob boss in what appears to be an act of revenge.
He has developed remarkable powers but, because he is the villain, they are never going to be enough to overwhelm the good bad guys, including Chow Yun Fat.
The film jumps all over the place, adding tangents which lay complexities on to the complex and make it almost impossible to penetrate.
It felt as if the director was either trying too hard to please his audience or had just lost the plot.
Fortunately, he had a saving grace in an illustrious cast with Fat and Andy Lau among those who tried their best to save a movie which remained a mess,
Reasons to watch: crazy martial arts caper which will be loved by fans of Chinese cinema
Reasons to avoid: it doesn't make much sense for a lot of the time.
Laughs: none
Jumps: none
Vomit: none
Nudity: none
Overall rating: 4/10

From Vegas to Macau III is the second movie in my life that made me fell asleep in the cinema.
