269. Queen Nanny - Legendary Maroon Chieftainess

QUEEN NANNY - LEGENDARY MAROON CHIEFTAINESS
Cert TBA
58 mins
BBFC advice: TBA

A great swathe of world culture has been unveiled to me since I began the everyfilm challenge back in 2011 but more than five years later I am still learning,
This was evidenced with Roy T. Anderson's Queen Nanny - Legendary Maroon Chieftainess.
A short feature, it is a biopic of an 18th century leader of African slaves who fought to free themselves after they had been transported to Jamaica.
In fact, Nanny is a modern-day hero in Jamaica despite a paucity of historical documents about her life.
Anderson's documentary outlines the belief that she was born in Ghana and escaped from slavery shortly after arriving in the Caribbean.
There are contributions from modern-day Maroons (what Nanny's people became known as) academics, politicians and well-known Jamaican figures about the influence that she still holds in the country.
Such is the admiration for her that a group of people agree to take on a treacherous trek to her former home in Nanny Town which is high in the Blue Mountains.
They see this as a pilgrimage to pay homage to a spiritual as well as historical leader.
Anderson's film is informative and interesting. It is not his fault that there isn't enough information about Queen Nanny to give it more depth.

Reasons to watch: fascinating history of Jamaica
Reasons to avoid: a eulogy rather than a biopic

Laughs: none
Jumps: none
Vomit: none
Nudity: in a drawing
Overall rating: 7/10
