249. Bizans Oyunlari - Geym Of Bizans; movie review

BIZANS OYUNLARI - GEYM OF BIZANS
Cert 12A
106 mins
BBFC advice: Contains moderate sex references, innuendo, sex, moderate bad language

Top on the everyfilm tick-off list for the past few months has been Gani Müjde's strange Turkish comedy. So, I nipped on to ebay and ordered myself a copy of Bizans Oyunlari.
I could have complained at the £15 outlay but if I had driven to London when it was released earlier this year I would have shelled out more in petrol.
I was more than happy that I had saved on costs because this film, based on a mangling of history, was really not up my street.
To be honest, my knowledge of ancient Europe is not good enough for me to contradict the premise of a Mayan migration to Byzantine, But I have spent a while looking through internet search engines and I can find no evidence of it.
Anyway, after the death of a Byzantine leader, his children conspire to try to rid the empire of the Mayans who are better fighters and better thinkers.
The trump card against them is their devotion to their women who are kidnapped by the sneaky Byzantines.
If none of this makes too much sense, don't worry. Think Carry On translated into Turkish and you might be on the right track.
Anyway, there is much slapstick - (for example, one of the Mayans sees off a lion in a ludicrous gladiatorial match-up) and it being a Turkish comedy , there is much pulling daft faces (see the poster) and shouting.
It left me wondering why I had shelled out on a DVD - but at least I had manged to cut my losses.

Reasons to watch: if you are into the slapstick weirdness of Turkish comedies
Reasons to avoid: too off-the-wall for many tastes, I would think

Laughs: none
Jumps: none
Vomit: none
Nudity: none
Overall rating: 5/10
