281. Summertime (La belle saison); movie review Cécile De France

BBFC advice: Contains sexualised nudity

Days such as today sadden me because they dampen the spirits of the joyful French.
Today we have learned that a lunatic drove a 19-tonne truck through crowds in Nice, killing 84 and injuring more than 100.
I cannot imagine a greater contrast than Catherine Corsini's Summertime.
This is the story of love in adversity in parallel to a public protest which is vigorous but, ultimately harmless.
Izïa Higelin plays Delphine a farm girl who wants to go to Paris to study despite the desire of her mum (Noémie Lvovsky) for her to stay and be married.
The latter option is particularly unappealing because Delphine prefers girls to boys and when she joins a women's rights' group she falls head over heels for its leader (Cécile De France).
The latter is ensconced in a relationship with a fella but cannot resist Delphine's charms whatever problems a love-match might bring.
Little does she know what she is taking on but between the sparks, this is a film about love and summer in France.
It is attractive and acted with gusto and represents much of the wonders of France that today's terrorists are trying to quash.
They must not succeed.

Reasons to watch: intoxicating love story
Reasons to avoid: Cecile De France's character's progressive neediness
