BBFC advice: Contains moderate violence, occasional bloody detail, references to sexual violence
Finally, I have managed to catch-up with Theri - three months after my sub-titling pal Rekhs recommended it to me.
Atlee Kumar's film has broken box office records all over the world and stars Vijay as a former tough-guy cop who is now the single parent of a delightful young daughter (Baby Nainika).
Her teacher (Amy Jackson) falls for the charms of the little girl and the smouldering good looks of her dad but wants to know their back story.
Therefore, we are transported from cutesy opening to a tough cop versus villain drama which has echoes of Singham.
Vijay is the hard-as-nails senior officer who despises corruption within his force almost as much as he hates the criminals who have bought their way to power.
But with his uncompromising attitude comes a price and when he hands out individual justice to the rapist son of a politician (J.Mahendran) he puts himself and his loved ones in peril.
I can see why Theri is so popular - good guy with high family virtues takes on the bad guys with the added dimension of a very cute young actress and a couple of beautiful love interests (Jackson and Samantha Ruth Prabhu) thrown into the mix.
Vijay has great charisma, impish and yet brutal, although I am not so convinced that he would really have the physique to beat up 13 goons at the same time.
And there are some great tunes - starting with a really catchy opener.
But, ultimately, I was surprised that it lacked the individuality I expected. There is nothing new about good cop trying to battle against corruption in Indian cinema and some of the confrontation scenes were, frankly, a bit laughable.
However, it is an example of how Kollywood (Tamil cinema) has in a very short time, reached the high production standards of Bollywood (Hindi cinema).
Reasons to watch: Powerful performance by Vijay
Reasons to avoid: yet another good cop versus corruption thriller
Laughs: none
Jumps: none
Vomit: none
Nudity: none
Overall rating: 7/10
