OSMAN PAZARLAMA
Cert 15
117 mins
BBFC advice: Contains strong language
Off to Lincoln for the weekend, I was in need of a movie to watch on my ipad as Mrs W drove us to see the rest of the White clan.
And I was pleased to see that a film which made it briefly to north London screens a few months ago has now graduated to itunes,
Togan Gökbakar's Osman Pazarlama is yet another Turkish comedy in which rapid-fire dialogue and screeching is a hallmark.
Sahan Gökbakar plays Osman, an overly optimistic entrepreneur who has more than 300 patents for products which nobody wants.
He is also in love with a girl (Esra Balikci) who is not only disinterested but is obviously out of his league.
But none of his failures, either in business or in romance, serve to dilute his belligerence and his unswerving and misplaced belief in himself.
Mehmet Salim Akgul plays Osman's gopher who has a loyalty to him despite being treated appallingly and Feristah Senem Yildirim is the pretty girl who is in love with him for reasons even his mother cannot fathom.
I can report that Osman Pazarlama's slapstick did make me laugh more than I thought it would because Gökbakar is particularly adept at the Mr Bean-style physical humour.
But, again, I was thrown by a Turkish comedy which makes jokes which would be seen as politically incorrect in the UK. This was very evident when Osman demands to take on some Asian workers and then proceeds to abuse those who have been recruited.
This is typical of a character which might have been Ok in a TV comedy sketch but is very wearing over nearly two hours, Long before its end, I stop finding him funny.
Reasons to watch: more giggles than the average Turkish comedy
Reasons to avoid: many of its gags would be seen as very politically unsound in the West
Laughs: four
Jumps: none
Vomit: none
Nudity: none
Overall rating: 5.5/10
